Digital twin for lawyers: what it can do and where its limits are
A digital twin for lawyers is an AI copy of the lawyer, with their face, their voice and a brain holding their materials and rules, built for the repetitive part of client relationships and never for giving legal opinions. Today the twin, the brain with its Book of Criteria and the AI notice exist; workflows specific to legal practice are in development.

What is a digital twin for lawyers?
It is a version of the lawyer made with artificial intelligence: it has their face and their voice, and a brain of its own holding their materials, their way of explaining things and their rules about what may and may not be answered. Its job is to handle the part of the client relationship that repeats itself, always saying that it is an AI.
The short definition of Digital Twin by Legathum is this: a professional cloned with AI who serves clients and sells at any hour. In a law firm, that does not mean the twin acts as a lawyer. It means the first explanation, the questions that keep coming back and the orderly collection of information can stop taking hours out of your diary, while the legal judgement on each case stays yours.
Which tasks make sense and which do not?
The line is drawn by one simple question: does the answer depend on a client's specific facts? If it does, it is yours. If it is the same for anyone who asks, your twin can handle it with what you have given it.
| Task | Does it make sense for the twin? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Explaining how the firm works, which areas it covers and what the first consultation is like | Yes | It is general information and you write it |
| Answering frequent questions with general legal information | Yes, with your materials | It does not assess anyone's case |
| Collecting the basic details of a matter before the first meeting | Yes, within limits | Only what is necessary, and without deciding anything |
| Explaining your fees and the engagement letter | Yes | The client has to receive that information anyway |
| Assessing whether a specific case is viable | No | It is your professional duty and depends on the facts |
| Giving an opinion, a strategy or an estimate of the outcome | No | It is the core of a lawyer's work |
| Negotiating with the other side or speaking for the client | No | It requires a mandate and judgement in real time |
The rule worth writing into your Book of Criteria is the one that closes every conversation: when a question asks for an assessment of a specific case, the right answer is to suggest an appointment with you.
What does Spain's Bar Statute say?
Three rules in the General Statute of the Spanish Legal Profession, approved by Royal Decree 135/2021, bear directly on how a twin is used in a law firm. Other jurisdictions have their own professional rules, which you should check in the same way.
The first is professional secrecy. Article 21 imposes a duty to keep secret every fact or piece of information you learn through your professional work, and Article 22 extends it to all data, communications and documents. The same article requires you to make sure that secrecy is respected by your colleagues and by anyone else who works with you. Any tool that handles your clients' information enters that chain, and it is worth choosing and setting it up with that in mind.
The second is recordings. Under Article 22.3, conversations with your clients by any remote means may only be recorded with the prior warning and agreement of everyone taking part. A meeting handled by a twin is a remote conversation: the warning has to come before, not after.
The third is advertising. Article 20 forbids promising results that do not depend solely on your own work. Whatever your twin tells a prospective client is, for all purposes, your firm speaking, and it must respect the same limit.
What should your clients know?
That they are talking to an AI, from the very first moment. Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires people to be told clearly at the latest at the first interaction. In Digital Twin by Legathum, the twin says so in its first turn and its name in the meeting ends in "Clon IA". You can reinforce this on your website, on your booking page and in each appointment confirmation.
They should also know what happens to what they tell it. Legal matters easily involve specially protected data: information about someone's health, family life or beliefs. The GDPR asks you to process only what is necessary for the purpose, and Article 9 gives those categories stronger protection. For a law firm's twin, the practical consequence is simple: before the first meeting, ask for the minimum needed to prepare the appointment and leave the detail for the conversation with you.
How do you prepare a lawyer's brain?
With your own materials and written rules. Start with what you already explain again and again: what the first consultation involves, which documents are worth bringing, how your fees work, what general timescales each type of matter has. The clearer it is in your materials, the better the twin will answer general questions.
Then write your boundary rules into the Book of Criteria, each with its condition, its action, its reason and its source. For example: if someone asks whether they are likely to win, the twin does not assess the case and suggests an appointment with you, because viability depends on the facts and is a professional judgement. Or: if someone starts sharing health details, the twin asks them to keep them for the meeting.
The Book works in versions that you approve, and you can export it at any time.
What exists today and what is in development?
Nothing that has not been checked is presented as available. This table separates the two for a lawyer.
| Feature | Status today |
|---|---|
| A twin with your face and your voice, from a recording of about seven minutes | Exists |
| Its own Master Brain, with a Book of Criteria of rules reviewed and approved by you, each with its source | Exists |
| Says it is an AI in its first turn, and its name ends in "Clon IA" | Exists |
| Real people only, with verified consent, revocable with one click | Exists |
| Booking page connected to your calendar | Exists |
| Meetings on Google Meet | Exists for the house twin; for each client's twin, in development |
| Workflows specific to legal practice: first consultation, case file preparation and an appointment with you when needed | In development |
| Applying your rules in the conversation and saying which rule each answer comes from | In development |
Today consultancy is the profession the method and session types are designed for. For a law firm, that means starting with the general: explaining how you work and preparing the first appointment well.
What exists today and what comes next
- Today: a twin with your face and your voice, a Master Brain with a Book of Criteria, the AI notice and the "Clon IA" name, verified and revocable consent, and a booking page.
- In development: workflows specific to legal practice, with the first consultation, case file preparation and an appointment with you when a question calls for it.
- In development: the twin applying your rules in the conversation and citing the rule behind each answer.
Frequently asked questions
Can a digital twin give legal advice?
It should not. It can give general legal information from your materials; assessing a case, giving an opinion or estimating an outcome is always yours.
What about professional secrecy?
The Statute requires you to make sure anyone working with you respects it. That is why the twin should ask for the minimum before the meeting, and you decide what information goes into its brain.
Do clients have to be told the meeting is recorded?
Yes. Article 22.3 of the Spanish Statute requires prior warning and the agreement of everyone taking part before a conversation with a client is recorded.
Will my clients know they are talking to an AI?
Yes. The twin says so in its first turn and its name in the meeting ends in "Clon IA", as Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires.
Can I see it before I buy?
Yes. You can book a 15-minute meeting with Deibson Silva, who takes those meetings in person, and discuss how it would fit your firm.
